Landscape Paintings

Most of my landscape images begin as either an en plein air sketch or as a pencil drawing on location and are then finished in my studio. Photographs are occasionally used as references where time and travel are prohibitive. I also do commission work for clients. I prefer to do this work as a combination of onsite visits and photos but I am very willing to work from photographs when visiting is impossible. Please contact me for additional information.

Both of my children learned to sail at a very young age thanks to my father, who always thought experiences were better than gifts. They both love the water. This is not our boat (although maybe someday) but it caught both my children's eyes and they commented on it. My daughter and I stopped and sketched it and later back in my studio it became a small painting.

This painting originated from a weekend mountain visit near Como, Colorado. Near sunset as we were preparing to head out the elk in the image silently walked out from the trees. My family and I watched as he cautiously looked around, drank and then just as quickly he disappeared back into the trees. Magical moments surround us when we slow down enough to watch.

This image was created on site.  This view holds many fond memories for me as my children have spend many hours sailing this bay on the lake I spent most of my childhood summers.   Church bells can be heard across the water every Sunday morning.

Growing up in Colorado the Columbine flower has always held a special place in my heart.  It covered the hills of many family picnics, camping trips and almost every childhood friend had them growing in their backyard.  I see them and think of the childhood joys of summer.  I also graduated from Columbine High School.  The main hallway had a huge Columbine flower painted in it when I attended.  This flower seemed to greet us every morning and thus reminds me of all the fun wonderful events of high school: the kiss your tan goodbye dance, marching band, football games, prom and silly nights with friends.

This painting was done after a fishing trip with my kids and the Cub Scouts.  The first day of camping was a wet rainy day and thus not my favorite trip, but the next morning was a gorgous Colorado morning.  The kids all hiked up to the lake to fish. All the boys did wonderful catching trout and learning to flyfish from a good friend of ours but for me the best part of the day was my daughter's face when she landed the first (and later found to be the biggest) fish of the day.  This was painted from one of her drawings and her dirrections.

My children love sailing and sail their boat out throughout the summer.  Afternoons in the mountains of Colorado or on the water throughout the nation are some of my best memories.

Mountain Bloom

I love going into the mountains with my family early in the summer season to see all the mountain blooms.  The first time my husband gave me flowers he didn't actually give me any flowers but  took me on a picnic in a meadow full of wildflowers.  Every time I see a hillside full of blooms it reminds me of that day.

My son loves fly fishing with his Boy Scout troop and with his Dad.  Fishing was a new pass time to me as my family didn't really fish much when I was a kid.  While I am ok at fishing, I find I really prefer to watch and paint.
